Bernhardt's Last Second Bomb Lifts Tigers Over Warhawks

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio— Wittenberg did battle on Saturday at Edwards-Maurer field against Division III perennial powerhouse Wisconsin Whitewater. The game was far from friendly, the Tigers and Warhawks partook in a "chippy" back-forth-affair.

Playing to a restless crowd on campus, the Tigers outlasted the Warhawks, as the game came down to the final seconds in the most exciting finish of the opening athletics weekend at Wittenberg.

Sophomore Missy Bernhardt found the back of the net with under a minute remaining in the match to give the Tigers the hard-fought victory. With the Tigers threatening, Bernhardt found a loose ball bounce her way as she finessed a beautiful lob from way out, as the shot floated over the Warhawks goalie with precious time winding down.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

  • All three of Wittenberg's goals were unassisted, as the team applied pressure on the Warhawks goalie all morning with eight shots on goal.
  • Leah Soutar and Taylor Vaughn-Stanton both netted highlight reel goals for the Tigers in the first half, as the halftime lead for the Tigers stood at 2-0.
  • Wisconsin Whitewater came roaring back out of the halftime break, scoring two goals in less than ten minutes to knot things up at 2-2.
  • Bernhardt saved her best for last, claiming the role of hero on the day as her last second shot floated into the net.
