COLUMBUS, Ohio - Through the first two games of the 2015 season, the Wittenberg Tigers had managed just one goal. In 90 minutes against Fredonia in a game hosted by Capital, the Tigers survived oppressive heat to outscore the Blue Devils 5-1.

The win was Wittenberg's second during a busy Labor Day weekend, pushing the Tigers to 2-1 on the young season. Fredonia fell to 1-2.

Wittenberg outshot Fredonia by a 14-4 count in the first half, but the final tally wound 24-21 in favor of the Tigers. Fredonia held a narrow 7-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but the Tigers turned away 11 Blue Devil shots on frame, including two by defensive players other than sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Wilson (Pickerington, Ohio/North).

Wilson was credited with nine saves in the game, compared to eight for Fredonia's goalkeeper.

Wittenberg scored twice in the first half, starting with an unassisted tally off the foot of freshman Megan Davis (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Pickerington) in the 19th minute. Sophomore Emma Hawthorn (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) made it 2-0 in the 39th minute off a feed from freshman Taylor Vaughn (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands).

After Fredonia pulled a goal back early in the second half, the Tigers quickly took control again as senior Kate Burns (Granger, Ind./Penn) scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute. Sophomore Nicole Karavakis (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Pickerington Central) and freshman Emma Box (Springfield, Ohio/Graham) rounded out the scoring off a feed from sophomore Lauren Hofer (Avon, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) at the 70:14 and 73:00 marks, respectively.
