SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Despite a chilling rain, one of the hottest teams in the Great Lakes Region continued its mid-season surge with a 1-0 defeat of visiting Transylvania.

The win was Wittenberg's fourth in a row, dating back to a 3-1 home win over Earlham on Sept. 19, and it extended the Tigers' unbeaten string to five, including a 0-0 tie with then-24th ranked Case Western on Sept. 15. For the season, Wittenberg now stands at 5-2-2 overall, while Transylvania dropped to 5-3-1.

The Tigers got all the offense they would need in the 12th minute when sophomore Tobie Weston (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Christian) bent in a corner kick that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the net. Wittenberg outshot Transylvania 14-7 for the game overall, including an advantage of 7-2 in the opening 45 minutes.

Another stout defensive performance secured the victory for the Tigers, who have allowed just five goals in nine games in 2012. Wittenberg has five shutouts to its credit, with the win over Transylvania being the first credited to senior goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula), who made four saves.

Standing atop the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standings with a 2-0-0 record, the Tigers head back into league play Saturday, Oct. 6. Hiram provides the Homecoming weekend opposition, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. at Edwards-Maurer Field.
