Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Wittenberg women's soccer team withstood an offensive barrage by host Carnegie Mellon on the first day of the Tartan Cup to hold on for a 0-0 tie.

Wittenberg, which is now 1-1-1 on the season, was outshot 22-8 in the game, while Carnegie Mellon also held a whopping 14-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities. However, both teams needed a team save from a defensive player to hold on for the scoreless draw.

Senior goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) made six saves in the game, compared to three by her counterpart from Carnegie Mellon, which is now 1-0-2 on the season. Through the first three games of the 2012 season, Lythjohan and the stout Tiger defense has allowed just one goal in a 1-0 loss to Wilmington on Sept. 5.

Offensively, freshman Kaylee Gialamas (Willoughby, Ohio/Hawken) led with three shots, while junior Kayla Murphy (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins) finished with two shots, both of which she directed on frame.

The Tigers return to action against Frostburg State at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, also at the Carnegie Mellon Tartan Cup.
