Wilmington, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's soccer team was unable to keep the momentum going. After scoring six goals, the Tigers' best single-game offensive output since 2009, in a season-opening win over Mount St. Joseph, Wittenberg was shut out 1-0 by Wilmington.

The loss was Wittenberg's first to the Quakers since 2002. The goal by Wilmington, which improved to 3-0 on the 2012 season, was the first against the Tigers since a 1-1 tie in 2004.

After a scoreless first half, Wilmington broke through in the 69th minute against senior goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), who was credited with five saves in the game.

Wilmington outshot Wittenberg 10-4 and attempted eight corner kicks to the Tigers' two. Freshman Kate Burns (Granger, Ind./Penn) and junior Kayla Murphy (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins) each took one shot in the game, while senior Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) was credited with two shots, including the Tigers' lone attempt directed on frame.

Wittenberg has little time to worry about the defeat as the Tigers hit the road on Friday for games on Saturday and Sunday in the Carnegie Mellon Tartan Cup. Wittenberg will take on the host Tartans at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, and Frostburg State at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.
