SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's soccer team put up a strong fight but a well-placed corner kick by Allegheny in the 84th minute handed the Tigers a 1-0 loss, a 4-4-1 overall record and an 0-1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference record Sunday at Edwards-Maurer Field.

Late in the game, Allegheny's Kira Kliment lined up a corner kick that sailed into the box and just over the hands of Wittenberg junior goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and to the Gators' Jaymee Wallace, who punched a point blank-range volley past a Tiger defender into the goal.

It was the only goal in a game that saw only 13 shots, seven for Allegheny and six for the Tigers. The Wittenberg defense worked hard to limit Allegheny's opportunities, led by the efforts of starting defenders Kelly Brothers (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), Lauren McMahon (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline), Meredith Kirby (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) and Lauren McMahon (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson).

Junior forward Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) paced the offense with three shots, two of them on goal, followed by senior forward Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) with two shots and senior midfielder Allie Keefer (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) with one.

Lythjohan finished the game with four saves.
