SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's soccer team started the 2010 season off with a strong 3-1 win over visiting Mount St. Joseph Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field.

After the Tigers took a one-goal lead into the halftime break, the Lions of Mount St. Joseph posted an equalizer on a shot from long distance that found its way over sophomore Tiger goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and into the opposite corner 10 minutes into the second period. The stalemate lasted 15 minutes before junior forward Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) gave the Tigers back the lead with a short shot across the goal mouth on an assist from sophomore Lauren McMahon (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline).

Wittenberg earned some insurance with just five minutes remaining in the game when senior forward Cailyn Roeble (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales) lost her defender and broke to the goal to receive a centering pass from sophomore midfielder Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont). Roeble's shot glanced off the Lion goalkeeper before rolling in for the Tigers' third score.

The game began with 30 minutes of scoreless action. Wittenberg took its original 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Kelly Brothers (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) found junior midfielder Allie Keefer (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) undefended 12 yards from the goal.

Thanks to the typically strong Tiger defense, goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) was not forced into any saves during the first half. The Lions managed four shots, two on goal and all in the second period, against the Tigers' 13, including seven on goal. Lythjohan took over defense of the net at the half and notched one save and one goal allowed.

The Tigers travel to Wilmington for their first road game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 4, starting at 6 p.m.
