SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A 0-0 score held throughout all four periods for Friday's women's soccer match between Wittenberg and Albion. The Tigers move to 1-0-1 overall following the mutual shutout in their 2009 home opener.
Wittenberg put pressure on the Britons throughout the match, racking up 12 shots while holding Albion out of range. Wittenberg sophomore forward Taylor Goss (Sandy Springs, Md./Friends School) led the Tigers with five attempts, and fellow sophomore forward Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) followed with three shots.
Played mostly at midfield, the game lasted 120 minutes, all spent in the net by freshman goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula), though she never faced a shot. The Tiger defense has allowed only five shots, just one on goal, in 210 minutes of play. Gartner has earned two shutouts in as many games, forced into only one save.
Patrolling the quiet backfield against Albion were starters Kelly Brothers (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy), Kelly Foley (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) and Lauren McMahon (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland), who each contributed to the shutout.
The Tigers return to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 6, with a home match versus Walsh University, scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
