Tigers Get Defensive Again In Win Over Centre

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Through four games in 2009, the Wittenberg Tigers have found an identity. The defense was stingy again Friday, and the offense was opportunistic in contribuing to a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Centre College in the first round of the DePauw Classic.

The Tigers have scored just two goals in their first four games, but they have not allowed a goal in compiling a 2-0-2 record. After outshooting Centre 10-4, the Tigers hold a 58-13 advantage in shots. Amazingly, Wittenberg goalkeepers have been forced into just two saves, including one against the Colonels.

For the first time since a season-opening win at Mount St. Joseph, the Tigers found their way onto the scoreboard. The first career score by freshman Leslie Oliver (Enon, Ohio/Greenon) off a feed from junior Maureen Buckley (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) came in the 89th minute of the game, breaking a 306-minute scoreless drought for Wittenberg.

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) was solid again between the pipes, making one first-half save.

The Tigers look to complete a perfect weekend against host DePauw at 7 p.m. Saturday.
