Tigers Complete Perfect Weekend At DePauw With 1-0 Win

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on a tremendous weekend with a 1-0 win over the host Tigers in the DePauw Classic.

Wittenberg, which has not allowed a goal through five games in 2009, improved to 3-0-2 on the still-young season. DePauw, normally a powerhouse team not only in the Great Lakes Region but nationally, dropped to an uncharacteristic 0-3-2.

Much as they did in their Friday night win over Centre, the Tigers played their customarily stingy defense and came up with a second-half goal to capture the victory. This time it was sophomore Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) who finished a play started by sophomoreTaylor Goss (Sandy Spring, Md./Friends School) in the 68th minute.

From there, it was up to the Tiger defense, which once again was equal to the task. The script was a bit different this time, however, as DePauw became the first team in 2009 to outshoot Wittenberg (9-6), but just two of those attempts were directed on goal as freshman Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) posted her fifth straight shutout in goal. In five games this year, Gartner has been forced into just four saves.

The Tigers return home for a key regional showdown with Ohio Northern at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. The Polar Bears topped Wittenberg at home a year ago.
