GAMBIER, Ohio - Just days after their first North Coast Athletic Conference loss of the 2009 season, the Wittenberg women's soccer team dropped their second-straight NCAC decision to Kenyon by a 2-1 margin in overtime Tuesday night, falling to 2-2-0 in conference action and 7-3-3 overall as a result.
The Tigers, fresh off a close loss to the Hiram Terriers last Saturday, looked to rebound against the Kenyon Ladies, but despite a 16-9 advantage in shots, could not follow through. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the overtime game ended with just 23 seconds to go in the first overtime.
The Ladies opened the scoring with a goal in the 30th minute, and the goal stood alone until the Tigers evened the tally in the second half. In the 66th minute, sophomore forward Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) scored off of a corner-kick assist from freshman forward Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) corner kick. The score remained knotted throughout the rest of the game, before Kenyon headed in the game-deciding goal in the 100th minute.
Three Tigers split the team lead in shots, with freshman midfielder Amy Cook (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby), Chambers and Striebel each shooting three times. As a team, Wittenberg landed six shots on goal, compared to three for Kenyon. Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Columbus, Ohio/St. Ursula) stopped three shots throughout the game.
The Tigers return to action with a 2 p.m. contest at home versus Oberlin on Saturday, Oct. 17.
