SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers usually win with defense, but in today's home opener against Washington and Jefferson, it was offense that took center stage in a Tigers' 4-0 victory.
It was an even battle between both teams until midway through the first half when freshman forward Kelly Clark (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) scored off a deflection. After that, the Tigers took over. Just three minutes later junior midfielder Amanda Farrell (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) hit the ball in the back of the net off a cross from teammate Lisa Rusch (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). The Tigers led 2-0 at halftime.
Coming out even stronger in the second half, Wittenberg kept the momentum. The first goal of the second half came from a corner kick by sophomore Suzanne Medwid (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), which was re-directed into the goal by sophomore defender Jamie Mack (Rochester, NY/Denfield), who cut through traffic to head the ball past the goalie and put the Tigers ahead by three goals. The last goal was scored late in the game when a Presidents' defender was called for a penalty inside the box. Lisa Rusch took the kick and placed the ball nicely in the lower left corner of the net.
The Tigers took a total of 12 shots in the game compared to the Presidents' two. Wittenberg's record improved to 4-2 overall, while the Presidents fell to 4-2-1. Wittenberg hopes to carry the momentum into their next game on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at home against Mount St. Joseph.
