Wittenberg Falls In Final Game Of Nazareth Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Moral victories aren't what the 2006 Wittenberg Tigers are all about, but that's what the team was left with Sunday after a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the host team in the deciding game of the season-opening Nazareth Tournament.

The Tigers, who had captured a 1-0 win over William Smith in Saturday's season-opener, dropped to 1-1 with the loss. Wittenberg has a week to work on some things before a key regional road trip to DePauw and Rose-Hulman next weekend.

Wittenberg outshot its hosts 8-7 in the second half, but the Tigers were unable to find the back of the net. Nazareth netminder Shannon Burns turned away six shots in the game, two of which were sent in that direction by junior Lindsey Rusch (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). She had a team-high four in the game, two less than Nazareth's Rosie Simiele, who had the lone score of the day in the 42nd minute.

For the game, Wittenberg had eight corner kicks, compared to three for the host team, which narrowly won the shots battle, 13-11. Junior goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) finished with eight saves in the game.
