Tigers Top Oberlin To Keep Pace In NCAC Title Chase

OBERLIN, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers moved to the forefront of the North Coast Athletic Conference title chase Saturday with a 3-1 victory at Oberlin. In the process, senior defender Jamie McIntyre (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview) moved into the record books.

Wittenberg improved to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the NCAC, heading into a key conference match-up against perennial powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Edwards-Maurer Field. The Tigers moved into a first-place tie with Wooster after Denison lost to Kenyon Saturday.

The Tigers scored twice in the first half and added an insurance tally in the second half before Oberlin rounded out the scoring midway through the final 45 minutes. Junior Amy Meige (Westerville, Ohio/DeSales) found the back of the net 28 minutes into the game and freshman Sara Pirozzi (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) added a score about six minutes later. Sophomore Suzanne Medwid (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) had both assists.

Less than three minutes later, the Tigers put the game out of reach with a goal by junior Amanda Farrell (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland), off an assist from junior Stephanie Sharp (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East). For the game, Wittenberg was credited with a season-high 26 shots, while Oberlin's goalkeeper was put down for a whopping 22 saves.

While the Tiger offense was putting up one of its best totals of the season, the unheralded defensive unit was doing its usual stellar work, led by McIntyre, the two-time NCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The Cal Ripken of Wittenberg women's soccer, McIntyre has started all 74 games of her career in the Red & White, breaking Shana Ryan's six-year-old school record.
