Wittenberg Dominates Again In 2-0 Over Ohio Northern

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - At some point, the Wittenberg Tigers' seemingly impenetrable wall of defense will be pierced. Until that time comes, it is a thing of beauty to watch the Tigers control the midfield and thwart every opponents' scoring opportunity.

On Saturday night at Edwards-Maurer Field, the Tigers extended their season-opening win streak to six games and their shutout streak to five with an impressive 2-0 domination of Ohio Northern. Wittenberg has not allowed a goal since the first half of its season opener at Illinois Wesleyan on Sept. 2, which ties the school record of five straight shutouts set back in 1987.

In the first half, freshman defensive back Suzanne Medwid pushed up into the ONU penalty box on a corner kick and was rewarded for her efforts with a beautifully executed header into the corner of the net. Sophomore Lisa Rusch's well-placed corner kick set the play up and helped provide all the offense that the Tigers would need.

But for insurance purposes, a second-half goal was nice, too. That was provided by Rusch, who fielded a long pass, waged a battle for possession with two ONU defenders and still created enough space near the top of the penalty box to blast a long shot that nestled into the top of the Bears' net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke was tested precious few times in the game, in which Wittenberg held a 13-5 shot advantage, but she was up to task for four saves and several timely clears.
