Wittenberg Holds Off Urbana, 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers may not score too many goals, but with a stout defense that yields few offensive opportunities and even fewer goals to its opponents, that's ok. For the sixth time in 2004, the Tigers won a game 1-0, this time victimizing the visiting Urbana Blue Knights.

With the win, Wittenberg improved to 9-1-4 overall, while Urbana slipped to 6-8-2 on the season. The game was the final non-conference tilt on the 2004 schedule for the Tigers, who next host Kenyon in an important North Coast Athletic Conference game on Tuesday at Bill Edwards Field.

Wittenberg outshot its visitors 18-3, but most of those attempts never threatened to go in the goal. Urbana's goalkeeper was forced into just six saves for the entire game, while Wittenberg senior goalkeeper Eileen Quinn recorded her second straight shutout with two saves.

The game's lone score came at exactly 77:00, or 32 minutes into the second half. Freshman Sydney Bates corralled a long pass from junior Emily Hiscar and beat the Urbana goalkeeper and a defender on her back to find the open back. It was one of precious few quality scoring chances in a game primarily played in the midfield.
