Women's Lacrosse takes narrow 10-8 defeat at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team played a tight game at Trine on Saturday afternoon, ultimately falling 10-8.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (4-4 overall), Trine (5-2 overall)
  • Venue: Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium - Angola, Ind.

Stat Leaders

  • Senior Jessica Flick (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) led the Tigers with three goals and one assist for four points. This marked her seventh hat trick of the season.
  • Freshman Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) added two goals.
  • Sophomore Maren Raymond (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) also tallied two points, recording one goal and one assist.
  • Sophomores Anna Roller (New Albany, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and Sophia Meek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) added one goal apiece.
  • In goal for the Tigers, junior Gabrielle Weckerly (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) tallied 10 saves in 30 minutes, and junior Sidney Sheridan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) added five saves in the remaining 30 minutes.
  • Calista Richmond led Trine with eight points on three goals and five assists.

The Game

  • Trine scored the first two goals of the game, but Wittenberg answered with three straight goals, getting one score each from Flick, Roller and Wyse to take a 3-2 edge into the second quarter.
  • Trine responded with a 3-0 run for a 5-3 lead with 7:54 left in the second quarter, but a goal from Flick with 30 seconds remaining brought the Tigers back within one going into halftime.
  • Wittenberg tied the score on a goal from Meek with 11:21 left in the third quarter, and goals from Raymond and Wyse made it a 3-0 Tiger run to put the visitors ahead 7-5 with 3:43 remaining in the period.
  • Trine closed the third quarter with two straight goals to send the game into the fourth with the score tied at 7-all.
  • Trine added two more goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter for a 9-7 edge, but Wittenberg stayed within striking distance after getting a goal from Flick with 5:13 remaining.
  • Trine answered with a goal of its own just 14 seconds later, stretching the lead to 10-8 en route to the victory.
  • Trine out-shot Wittenberg by a 33-17 margin and won 14 of 22 draw controls while finishing with a 15-12 edge in ground balls.

We have a lot of work to do to get ready for conference play, but the team is eager to continue to grow."

  • Wittenberg is now 2-2 all-time against Trine.
  • Third-year head coach Becca Joseph, who played at Wittenberg from 2014-2017 and holds program records for career points (328) and assists (138) and ranks second all-time in goals (190), is now 11-30 at the helm of the Tigers.
  • Flick has 138 career points on 120 goals and 18 assists. She is tied for 10th all-time at Wittenberg in goals and is 14 points shy of entering the program's all-time top 10 list in that category. She has a team-high 38 points and 34 goals this season along with 23 career hat tricks.
  • Roller has 22 goals and a team-high seven assists for 29 points this season. She has 45 career points on 37 goals and eight assists.
  • Sheridan has 256 career saves, which ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg. Weckerly has 189 career saves.
  • Senior Zoe Chirumbolo McKee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) ranks ninth all-time at Wittenberg with 56 caused turnovers in her career.
