Tigers Drop Season Opener After Fourth Quarter Rally

Springfield, OH- Wittenberg stepped on the field for their season opener at home in the Steemer. The Tigers faced off with the Colonels for the first time since 2019. Wittenberg was able to put points on the board in each quarter and even outscore Centre in the third and fourth but ultimately fell with a score of 19-11.

The Tigers started behind in the first quarter, going until the 8:43 mark when Jessica Flick got through defense for Wittenberg's first goal of the season. Mya Wolfe followed with the Red & White's second goal of the season but Wittenberg went into the second half down 11-2. The Tigers put up two more goals in the second quarter from Grace Hehman and Flick. Hehman's goal came from senior Antavia Horne and marked the freshman's first collegiate goal.

Wittenberg was able to lead scoring in the third and fourth quarter with seven goals compared to the Colonels three. Flick picked up her hat trick in the start of the third quarter and added one more to her total at the end of the third. Wittenberg had three Tigers score in the fourth quarter with two coming off of assists from Mamula. Grace Kennedy picked up her first two goals of the season in the beginning of the fourth while Grace Hehman tallied the Tigers second hat trick of the game with two more goals and Flick grabbed her fifth goal of the game.

Wittenberg led in ground balls on the day with 22 with Antavia Horne picking up six and causing four turnovers from Centre. Splitting time in goal for the Tigers were Joanna Stecz, Gabrielle Weckerly, and Sidney Sheridan. The trio had a total of six saves after facing 25 shots.

Wittenberg Leaders- The Tigers had four different individuals score, being led by Jessica Flick with five goals, while Kelly Mamula led in assists with two.

Up Next- Wittenberg will return home for their next match-up on February 19th. They will compete against Transylvania at 1PM.
