Nine Goals By Clayton Propels Women's Lacrosse Past DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. – Sophomore Josee Clayton tied a Wittenberg single-game record with nine goals, helping propel the Wittenberg to a 21-9 win over the Tigers of DePauw University on the road on Wednesday evening. The two sides went back and forth through the early going, as the score was locked at 8-8 at the end of the first half. Wittenberg responded in the second half with an offensive explosion scoring 13 goals while playing lockdown defense and allowing DePauw to find the back of the net just one time in the second half. With this win, Wittenberg improves to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in NCAC action.

Game Breakdown

After DePauw tallied the first two goals of the game. Katurah Emery put the Red and White on the board before following up with her first assist on the first Clayton goal, knotting things up at 2-2. DePauw responded with two more goals to regain the 4-2 lead, as Emily Wadds and Gabby Zysik would take their turns making their way into the scoring column. After three consecutive DePauw goals, Rachel Bernard capitalized on the Gretchen Burkey assist to start put Wittenberg back on track. Clayton found the back of the net less than two minutes later for her second goal of the first-half. Zysik took the feed from Wadds, cutting into the DePauw lead, bringing the score to  8-7, capitalizing on the DePauw penalty. Emery would bring the game back to even for Wittenberg with her second goal of the half, scoring on the free position attempt.

Wittenberg went to the hot hand to start the second half, as Clayton scored four of the five goals coming out of the break. Bernard tallied her second goal of the game, pushing the Wittenberg lead out to 14-9, scoring on the free position attempt. With the lead safely in hand, Clayton scored three more goals in the to help Wittenberg secure the 21-9 win over DePauw.

Wittenberg will return home on Saturday, April 13 to host the ladies of Kenyon College and celebrate Senior Day. The first draw is set for 1:00 PM.
