Tigers Falls To John Carroll In Road Opener

University Heights, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team started their 2019 Spring Break trip by taking a trip to John Carroll University. The Blue Streaks jumped out to an early lead, hanging on to 19-7 advantage to take the win from the Tigers. Wittenberg kept it close in the draw control category, as the Red and White won 11 of the 25 on the day. The Tigers developed the offense, converting on 21 of 26 clear attempts against the Blue Streaks on the afternoon.

Game Breakdown

The Blue Streaks held an early 9-0 lead midway through the first half. The Wittenberg offense came alive with just under seven minutes remaining in the half, as Gabby Zysik beat the JCU defense put the Tigers on the board, coming off the Gretchen Burkey assist. Shannon Brown found the back of the net on the assist from Emily Wadds, cutting into the JCU lead, as the Blue Streaks held a 9-2 advantage at the break. The Tigers kept pace with the Blue Streaks in the second half of action, as each side found the back of the net five times through the first 10-minutes of action. Wittenberg cut the JCU advantage in half, trailing 14-7 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. Burkey and Rachel Bernard each tallied two goals for the Red and White during the second half. Zysik added a second goal to her total on the afternoon, while Wadds added a goal to go along with her first-half assist.

Who Stood Out

Burkey led the Tiger defense with four caused turnovers while picking up three ground balls on the day. Wadds tallied a team-high five draw control wins, while Bernard added four to her credit to go along with three caused turnovers. Zysik picked up five ground balls to lead the Red and White, providing a draw control win and a caused turnover.
