Tigers Blank Mount St. Joseph, 21-0

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers ran their season-opening win streak to three with a nearly flawless performance in a 21-0 victory over visiting Mount St. Joseph.

The win moved the Tigers to 3-0 on the young season, heading into a showdown against nationally ranked Lynchburg at 1 p.m. Sunday. Mount St. Joseph, which is in its third year as a varsity program, dropped to 1-2.

The Tigers simply overwhelmed the Lions from the outset, scoring at will over the first 30 minutes to build a commanding 10-0 lead and then substituting liberally throughout the final 30 minutes in outscoring Mount St. Joseph 11-0. Thirteen different Wittenberg players scored at least one goal in the game, while eight Tigers were credited with at least one assist.

Sophomore Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) and freshman Francine Murzynski (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led the way with three goals apiece, while sophomore Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) was tops in assists with three. Junior Jenn Close (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), senior Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy), freshman Sarah Pekot (Montesson, France/American School of Paris) and senior Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) all finished with two goals in the game, while Close, junior Lindsey Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) and junior Jessica Mead (Columbus, Ohio/Wellington School) all had two assists.

Wittenberg outshot its guests 37-8 in the game and picked up 32 ground balls, compared to six for the Lions. Close led in that category with five, followed by Amorello and Guiliano with four apiece.
