Tigers Fall At Defending NCAC Champ Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers fell behind in the first half and were unable to complete the rally in a 13-9 loss to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Wooster.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC, heading into a Senior Recognition Day contest at home against Ohio Wesleyan on April 13. The Scots, who have won three of the last four conference titles, improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

After Wittenberg scored the game's first goal, Wooster got the btter of play the rest of the first half, scoring seven of the next 10 goals to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. The Tigers rallied to 8-6 on a goal by senior Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) with 23:18 to play. But the Scots once again responded, this time with five of the next six goals before Wittenberg ended the game with the final two tallies.

Wooster held a 24-23 advantage in shots, 13-10 in draw controls and 19-15 in ground balls. Scots' goalkeeper Shawna Ferris was credited with eight saves, compared to six for Wittenberg junior Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids).

Individually, Wittenberg's offense was paced by senior Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) with three goals, while sophomore Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) added one goal and two assists. Beauchamp and sophomore Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) led with three draw controls apiece, Guiliano was tops with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, and junior Katie Frey (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) was solid as well with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
