Tigers Drop First Of Season To Visiting Lynchburg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team fell for the first time this season in an 18-13 loss to Lynchburg on Sunday. A late offensive surge fell short of keeping the Tigers from falling to 3-1 overall.

The Tigers scored the first two goals of the game and led 5-4 with five minutes remaining in the first half. But a three-goal outburst put the Hornets on top 7-5 heading into halftime.

Lynchburg scored the first six goals of the second half to take a 13-5 lead. Over the next 18 minutes, the teams split eight goals to make it a 17-9 game.

The Tigers then mounted a four-goal rally to pull within four at 17-13, but with only 47 seconds remaining after the last goal, the push came too late. Lynchburg netted the final goal of the game with 15 seconds on the clock to complete the scoring line.

Senior Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) led the Tiger lineup with four goals on five shots. She added two groundballs, two draw controls and one caused turnover.

Junior Jenn Close (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), freshman Francine Murzynski (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and senior Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) each posted two goals. Amorello also controlled two ground balls and three draw controls.

Junior Katie Frey (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston), sophomore Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) and freshman Caroline Eldridge (Amelia, Ohio/McNicholas) rounded out Wittenberg's scoring with one goal apiece.

Morrissey led the team in three categories, including ground balls (7), draw controls (4) and caused turnovers (3). Frey picked up six ground balls, and sophomore Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) took four.

The Hornets were led by five goals from Lesley Buckingham and four from Bri Slate.

Wittenberg heads to Michigan next for a 4:30 p.m. match at Albion College on March 23.
