Tigers Continue Hot Start With One-Sided Win Over Albion

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team is off to its hottest start in more than a decade after moving to 5-1 on the season with a lopsided 20-6 win over visiting Albion on Saturday.

In 1998, the Tigers rattled off five straight wins to open the season, and in 2010 the Tigers opened with three wins and have now won two since their only defeat this year.

Leading the way against the Britons was junior attackerMaggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) with team-highs of six goals, six groundballs and five draw controls. Amorello scored five of her goals in the first period, helping the Tigers to a 13-4 lead at halftime.

Sophomore attacker Jenn Close (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored four goals and midfielder Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) added two, while eight other Tigers scored one each.

Senior midfielder Joelle Ghanem (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and sophomore attackerKrissy Battles (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) each netted one of those goals, but made their biggest impact in setting up their teammates with five assists each.

Freshman defender Katie Warner (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) picked up four groundballs and won a draw control, while freshman midfielder Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) tallied three groundballs and three draw controls. In goal, sophomore Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) played the first half and made three saves, and freshman Katie Bondy (Westerville, Ohio/South) picked up the second half with four saves.

In total, the Tigers outshot Albion 42-17 and took 12 of 16 draw controls while picking up 30 groundballs to Albion's 17.

The Tigers resume their schedule with a 7 p.m. tilt at Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, March 24, the first of two road games.
