Tigers Win Memorable Contest in NCAC Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - It might just have been the coming out party that Head Coach Kati Robbins and her Wittenberg women's lacrosse team were looking for. Picked to finish sixth in the NCAC preseason poll, the Tigers made waves in their first conference outing of the season, ousting rival Ohio Wesleyan 14-13 in an overtime thriller.

Up for most of the match, the Tigers saw a three-goal lead evaporate late in the second half as the Battling Bishops asserted themselves in a 5-1 run to take a 12-11 lead. The Tigers would have one more response, however, with a goal coming from Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) with only nine ticks on the clock.

The goal forced overtime, where a newly invigorated Tiger squad punched home two goals in the first half of the overtime session; the eventual game-winner coming from freshman Lindsey Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls). Even with a two-goal lead the Tigers required late stops from freshman netminderJenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) to close out the win. Schaafsma finished with 11 saves on the night.

Beauchamp and senior Lizzie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy)proved to be a two-woman wrecking crew, as the duo combined for a staggering six goals and six assists.

The Tigers burst onto the NCAC scene with a 1-0 mark and 4-1 record overall after the win, and now will turn to the road, where a visit to St. Vincent College awaits this Sunday, April 5 at 2 p.m.
