PRATTVILLE, Ala. — The Wittenberg women's golf team opened the spring portion of its 2023-24 schedule on Day 1 of the Capitol Hill Classic on Monday and sits in 11th place amongst a strong field of competitors after the opening round.
The Basics
- Venue: Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill - Senator Course - Prattville, Ala., Par 72, Yardage: 5,672; Weather Conditions: 60 degrees and windy, 12-17 mph winds with 30 mph gusts
- The tournament is hosted by Huntingdon College.
- The 12-team field consists of six teams ranked in the top 25 nationally in the latest NCAA Division III Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll in No. 1 Carnegie Mellon, No. 8 Washington-St. Louis, No. 10 Washington and Lee, No. 19 Mary Hardin-Baylor, No. 21 Rhodes and No. 23 Methodist as well as two teams that received votes in the poll in Denison and Huntingdon. The latest poll was released on March 15.
- The field also includes NYU, Christopher Newport and Huntingdon's B team.
- This marks the Tigers' first competition since the Wittenberg Fall Classic on Oct. 15-16.
- The course will host an Epson Tour event in September. The Epson Tour is the qualifying tour for the LPGA.
The Tournament - Day 1
- Wittenberg sits in 11th place in the 12-team field after shooting a 56-over-par 344 on Monday. The Tigers lead the Huntingdon B team by five strokes and trail 10th-place Christopher Newport by six strokes.
- No. 1 Carnegie Mellon leads after Day 1, shooting a 17-over-par 305. NYU is second with a 308, and No. 19 Mary Hardin-Baylor is third with a 309.
- Sophomore Izzy Selby (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) was Wittenberg's top performer Monday, shooting a 10-over-par 82 to sit in a tie for 36th in the 67-woman field.
- Senior Ellen Frame (Mason, Ohio/Mason) is tied for 43rd with a 12-over-par 84.
- Sophomore Hillary Humbaugh (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) is tied for 47th with a 13-over-par 85.
- Junior Anna Longbrake (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) is 63rd with a 21-over-par 93.
- Junior Halley McNair (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) is tied for 64th with a 22-over-par 94.
- Playing as an individual, freshman Taylor Rausch (Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Mechanicsburg) is 67th with a 34-over-par 106.
