Tigers Take Sixth at NCAA Division III Preview

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Florida—After a short hiatus from competition, the Wittenberg women's golf program returned to action at the NCAA Division III Preview in Howey-in-the Hills Florida over the weekend. The El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club has been good to the Tigers in recent history, as Wittenberg dominated the field at the 2016 Preview, finishing in first as a team, while Jane Hopkinson-Wood earned medalist honors.

While the Tigers did not finish atop the leaderboard as a team in 2017, Wittenberg grabbed a top-ten finish after carding a two-round team-score of 647, good enough for sixth-place. In the 14-team field, the Tigers did battle with some of the nation's best competition, as the tournament has served as a benchmark for where the Tigers stand on the national stage in recent history. Wittenberg finished behind Huntingdon College (fifth), Berry College (fourth), Washington and Lee (third), Carnegie Mellon (second) and tournament champions, New York University.

Wittenberg was led by none other than Hopkinson-Wood, as the returning Preview champion showed well yet again for the Tigers, nabbing a fourth-place finish on the Sunday-Monday tournament. Hopkinson-Wood opened play with a 74, four off the lead of Arisa Kimura of NYU. Hopkinson-Wood returned to the course on Monday, firing a 76, tallying her two-day score to 150, two-strokes off the medalist, Kimura.

While the Tigers did not see, another golfer crack the top-twenty in the steep field of competitors, the Tigers had strong showing by Madi Wolters and Brianna Yee. Wolters carded rounds of 83 and 81 for Wittenberg, while Yee fired off rounds of 81 and 84.

The Tigers now shift their focus to the Dan Quayle Invitational in Danville, Indiana. Wittenberg will travel to Indiana for the Invitational with round one taking place on Saturday, September 23, with round two to follow on Sunday.
