Strong Start To Spring Season As Tigers Top Tourney Field

BEAUFORT, SC - The Wittenberg Tigers kicked off the second half of the 2014-15 season in style, going low on Day 2 of the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate to take first place.

The Tigers carded a 335 in the opening round and then pieced together a 330 in the second round to beat Bridgewater by nine strokes. Wittenberg had trailed eventual third-place finisher Washington & Lee by two strokes after the opening day.

Wittenberg finished with a two-round total of 665, followed by Bridgewater at 674 and Washington & Lee at 675. The field included a total of seven teams.

Playing the 5,900-yard, par-72 Morgan River Course at Dataw Island Golf Club, the Tigers put four players in the top 10 individually. Leading the way were freshman Jane Hopkinson-Wood (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) and junior Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown), both of whom recovered from an 86 in the opening round to post matching 79s on Day 2 for a total of 21-over-par 165. The two Tigers finished in a tie for sixth place.

Right behind was senior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) with a two-round total of 166 to finish eighth, and senior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) with a two-round score of 167 to place ninth. Wong was entered in the tournament as an individual.

Junior Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) checked in with a 169 to finish 11th in the 42-player field. Sophomore Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason) finished 16th with a score of 175 to round out the Tigers' top finishers.
