CLAYTON, Ind. - The Wittenberg Tigers nearly pulled off a most unexpected trifecta to open the 2014-15 season, but they were unable to hold on to a first-round lead at the DePauw Small College Classic. Wittenberg wound up six strokes behind perennial powerhouse Washington University to finish third in the final standings.

Wittenberg carded solid rounds of 323 and 324 on the two days of the competition at Deer Creek Golf Club. The first-round score was good for a first-place tie with Washington University, but the Bears went low on Day 2 with a 318 to finish with a total of 641. Carthage also topped Wittenberg in the second round to place second with a 645, followed by the Tigers with a 647.

Wittenberg had taken first place at the Denison Fall Invitational and St. Mary's O'Brien National Invitational to start the season. Just as she led the Tigers in the first two tournaments, freshman Jane Hopkinson-Wood (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) led the way individually in the 16-team, 92-player field.

Hopkinson-Wood finished in a three-way tie for first place with Connie Zhou and Olivia Lugar from Washington University. She carded rounds of 76 and 80 to finish with a 156 and earn all-tournament team honors.

Senior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) also claimed a spot on the all-tournament team after finishing in a tie for fifth place with a total of 159. Next up for the Tigers were senior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) in 22nd with a 166, junior Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) in 24th with a 167, and sophomore Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason) in 40th with a 172.
