CLAYTON, Ind. - The Wittenberg women's golf team has served notice over the last few years that it is ready to compete with the top teams in all of NCAA Division III. A tie for second place in the final standings at the 2013 DePauw Small College Classic will do nothing to dispel that notion.

The Tigers improved by 11 strokes on Day 2 of the tournament to move from third place into a tie for second with the host DePauw Tigers. Both teams wound up 13 strokes off the pace established by Washington University.

In the latest national rankings, Wittenberg is ranked No. 15, while DePauw, the two-defending North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) champion, is ranked fourth and Washington University stands fifth.

The DePauw Small College Classic was played at Deer Creek Golf Course on Saturday and Twin Bridges Golf Club on Sunday. Wittenberg carded a 326 in the opening round before finishing with a 315 on Day 2 to check in with a total of 641.

Individually, sophomore Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) carded matching rounds of 77 to earn all-tournament team honors with a third-place finish. Junior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) was six strokes behind Smith as she finished in a five-way tie for fifth place to garner second-team all-tournament.

Junior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) was next for Wittenberg in 10th place with a two-day total of 164, followed by sophomore Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) in 18th place with a 168. Lawwill bounced back from a disappointing 93 in the opening round to post the Tigers' best score of the weekend with a 75 on Day 2, while Wong earned second-team all-tournament.

Rounding things out was senior Deanna Mychalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) in 33rd place with a 177.
