GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's golf team turned in a strong second-place finish in the Denison Fall Invitational, which serves as the first two rounds of the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Series.

Fourth-ranked DePauw leads after the first two rounds, and the defending champion Tigers will take a commanding 17-stroke lead into the last two rounds at Oakhaven Golf Course in Delaware, Ohio, May 4-5. DePauw carded a total of 632, followed by 12th-ranked Wittenberg with 649 and Allegheny, ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region, which covered the par-71, 6,210-yard Granville Golf Course in 670.

Wittenberg was paced by freshman Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), who broke the school record for two-round score by two strokes. Smith finished just one stroke off the pace set by DePauw's Paige Gooch as she shot matching rounds of 75 for a total of 150 to top the previous mark established by sophomore Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) at last year's Washington University Invitational.

Smith's single-round score of 75 is tied for the second-best in program history, behind only Waers' 73 in the second round at Washington University. She finished a whopping eight strokes ahead of third-place Liz Blyth of Allegheny and Brynn FitzGerald of Denison.

Smith had plenty of help as freshman Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) and sophomore Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) tied for 10th place with matching totals of 168. Waers was next in 13th place with a 169, followed by junior Deanna Mychalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) in 17th place with a 175.
