GRANVILLE, Ohio – The 2012-13 women's golf season could not have gotten off to a better start for the Wittenberg Tigers after they captured a convincing 17-stroke victory at the season-opening Denison Fall Invitational at Granville Golf Course.

Not only did the Tigers win the team title after carding scores of 332 and 320 over the two-day competition, but the three Wittenberg players entered in the tournament as individuals all finished in the top 30 as well. It was a tremendous performance against a field that included five of the Tigers' six North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rivals, as well as five Ohio Athletic Conference foes.

The 320 that the Tigers posted on Day 2 ranks fourth in program history. The two-day total of 652 also stands fourth in the nine-year annals of the Tiger women's golf program.

Individually, Wittenberg was paced by sophomore Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry), who finished second in the 76-player field with a two-day total of 155. That matched her second-best collegiate performance and the fourth-best two-round score in program history.

Tying for third in the tournament was freshman Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown), who recovered from an opening round 84 to shoot a 77 on Day 2, which matched Waers and Invitational champion Brynn FitzGerald from Denison for the top round of the weekend. She was followed by sophomore Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) in ninth place with a two-day score of 167 and sophomore Rachel Steiner (Hamilton, Ohio/Lakota East) in 15th place with a 171.

Also placing in the top 10 for the Tigers was freshman Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), who shot a 165 to earn a tie for sixth place. Rounding out the Wittenberg scores were junior Miranda Pettit (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) in 17th with a 172, junior Deanna Mychalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) in 19th with a 173, and sophomore Savannah Fox (Massillon, Ohio/Perry) in 30th with a 178.

The Tigers next head west for the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic Sept. 15-16.
