Tigers Compete Well At Armstrong Atlantic Pirate Invitational

POOLER, Ga. — The Wittenberg women's golf team kicked off the spring portion of the 2011-12 season with a solid performance at the Pirate Invitational, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic University at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga.

Wittenberg placed 12th in the 16-team field, a fact made more impressive by the fact that the Tigers were the lone non-scholarship NCAA Division III program participating. NCAA Division II 10th-ranked North Carolina-Pembroke went wire-to-wire for the team title, winning by 10 strokes over 21st-ranked Central Oklahoma.

Wittenberg carded scores of 362 and 359 in the two rounds to finish at 721, 26 strokes behind 11th-place North Georgia. UNC-Pembroke turned in back-to-back rounds of 318 to finish at 636.

The Tigers were led individually by freshman Rachel Steiner (Hamilton, Ohio/Lakota West) with a two-day total of 173, good for 43rd place. FreshmanNicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) was next with a 181 to finish 56th, sophomoreDeanna Michalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) placed 66th with a 185 and juniorMeghann Greene (North Royalton, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) rounded out the scorers with a 187, good for 68th.
