Women's Basketball wins 75-57 at Oberlin; Cash sets program record for assists in a season

OBERLIN — The Wittenberg women's basketball team got a 75-57 win at Oberlin in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night. The win moves the Tigers into a tie with DePauw for second place in the league standings.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (17-6 overall, 10-3 NCAC), Oberlin (16-8 overall, 7-6 NCAC)

Stat Leaders

  • Junior Riane Burton (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ranch) and senior Jade Simpson (Edgewood, Ky./Holy Cross) led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points apeice.
  • Graduate student McKenna Baker (Brownsburg, Ind./Bethesda Christian) scored 13 points, followed closely by junior Taryn Cash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) with 12 points.
  • Cash also led the team in assists with eight, and Burton led in rebounds with nine to go with seven from Cash.
  • Senior Evie Wolshire (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union) provided a spark off the bench, leading the team with three blocks to go with five reboounds, four assists and seven points.

The Game

  • The game started off in Wittenberg's favor as the Tigers held a lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-11.
  • The Yeowomen then drew close and eventually took the lead 21-17 about halfway through the second quarter before the Tigers came out of the first half on top, 34-29.
  • The third quarter was all Tigers as they stretched the lead out to 12, 52-40.
  • Through the fourth quarter, the Tigers continued to coast en route to the 75-57 victory.
  • Throughout the game, the Tigers had a 52.5% shooting percentage and held the Yeowomen to 37.1% from the field. Wittenberg shot 35% from 3-point range while Oberlin shot 15.4%.
  • Both teams had 13 turnovers, and the edge in bench points went to Oberlin 21-20. Oberlin also led in rebounding, 36-33.
  • The Tigers had more assists, 20-16, and had 19 points off turnovers to Oberlin's 15.

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 64-18 all-time against Oberlin.
  • Second-year head coach Melissa Kolbe is now 38-11 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Cash has 120 assists this season, which is a program record for assists in a season. The old mark was 118 set by Delaney Williams in 2021-22. Her 251 career assists rank fifth in program history.
  • Burton is seven rebounds shy of 200 for the season.
