Women's Basketball gets 48-point victory over Hiram

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg women's basketball team jumped out to an double-digit lead en route to an 83-35 victory over Hiram in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (15-6 overall, 8-3 NCAC), Hiram (8-14 overall, 3-8 NCAC)
  • Venue: Pam Evans Smith Arena - Springfield, Ohio

Stat Leaders

  • Junior Jazmyn Gaines-Burns (Bladensburg, Md./Elizabeth Seton) led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Junior Riane Burton (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ranch) tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.
  • Junior Taryn Cash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) added 12 points and six assists.
  • Freshman Zy'Aira Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and junior Kelsey Ragan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) chipped in nine points each off the bench.
  • Maddie Rakestraw led Hiram in scoring with nine points.

The Game

  • After an early 4-4 tie, Wittenberg ended the first quarter on a 20-9 run to end the period with a 24-13 lead.
  • The Tigers scored the first six points of the second quarter via 2-point shots from senior Evie Wolshire (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union), Cash and freshman Karley Moore (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) for a 30-13 edge and took a 35-15 lead on a 3-pointer from Gaines-Burns with 3:13 left in the period.
  • Wittenberg led 40-16 at halftime and 61-27 going into the fourth quarter en route to the victory.
  • The Tigers held the Terriers to 25.4% shooting, including a 1-for-14 mark from beyond the arc.
  • The Tigers made 10 3-pointers in the game and out-rebounded the Terriers by a 41-35 margin.
  • WU scored 28 points off 20 Hiram turnovers and finished with a 44-22 edge in points in the paint.
