Angola, Indiana - The Wittenberg women's basketball team continued its hot start to the 2023-24 season, moving to 3-0 with a 65-59 win over Trine in the final game of the Thunder's Cameron Classic.

The win was Wittenberg's second against a team ranked in the d3hoops.com preseason poll. The Thunder entered the season at #17, while Ohio Northern, which lost to the Tigers in the season opener on November 10, opened at #10.

The win was also the second in as many nights for the Tigers against a quality opponent. Wittenberg got the weekend started with a 76-60 victory over Albion on Saturday. The Britons defeated Muskingum on Sunday to run their record to 3-1.

The key for Wittenberg once again was balance as senior Evie Wolshire (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union) led with 16 points and junior Jazmyn Gaines-Burns (Bladensburg, Maryland/Elizabeth Seton) was right behind with 15 points. Senior Jade Simpson (Edgewood, Kentucky/Holy Cross) chipped in with nine points and led both teams with 10 rebounds, and junior Riane Burton (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ranch) was productive off the bench with six points and nine rebounds.

Also of note, junior Taryn Cash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) overcame foul difficulties to post a tremendous stats line of seven points, seven rebounds and four assists, and freshman Madi Barnett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) came off the bench to provide similar production with four points, five rebounds and a team-high five assists.

For the game, Wittenberg shot 39 percent from the field, compared to 37 percent for the Thunder. Both teams took good care of the basketball, combining for just 22 turnovers. Rebounding was the key statistic for the winning team as the Tigers led the way in that category, 49-32, including a whopping 16 offensive boards.
