Women's Basketball Opens Season At Wilmington Tip-Off Tournament

Wilmington, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's basketball team returns to Springfield 1-1, opening the season against Spalding University and Mary Baldwin University from the Wilmington College Tip-Off Tournament. The Tigers dropped the opener at the buzzer to the Golden Eagles of Spalding 72-70. Wittenberg would turn around defeat Mary Baldwin 93-25 on day two quickly capturing the lead and never looking back. The bench came up big for the Tigers this weekend, with Amanda Raber 4 for 9 from the field and converting on all four of her attempts from the free throw line, coming off the bench. Raber tallied four rebounds and an assist with 13 points in game one of the weekend against Spalding. Raber would come off the bench on day two, giving the Tigers a nine-point, four rebound, four steal spark.

Leading scorer and coming off the bench, Abigail Yunker put up 15 points in 16 minutes of action. Yunker added eight rebounds and came up with four steals against the Mary Baldwin offense.

Senior Haley Dannemiller earned a spot on the All-Tournament team with a pair of 11 point games to start her final season in the red and white. Dannemiller added five rebounds, dishing out one assist. Day two, Dannemiller filled her stat line to the tune of three steals and two rebounds against Mary Baldwin.

Hannah Weaver came off the bench for 25 minutes of action and nine points, knocking down 3 of 9 three-point attempts against Spalding. Delaney Williams and Alex Kiess had four assists each, with Kiess pulling down five rebounds. Korynne Berner led the rebounding effort with six boards, along with six points.

Sydney Mayle put up a 17 point effort this weekend, with 10 points coming on Saturday against Mary Baldwin. Mayle had seven rebounds on the weekend, with six of the seven came at the offensive end of the floor.

 

FROM THE BENCH: "I was happy that we fought back yesterday at the end of the game but disappointed we couldn't pull it out," coach Kelly Mahlum said, "We did a good job of rebounding today and following our game plan. I was happy that everyone had the opportunity to get on the court today."

UP NEXT: The Tigers will continue their road trip when they travel to Capital on Tuesday, Nov. 21 to take on the Crusaders for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
