Wittenberg Women's Basketball Wins in 2OT  to Cap Off Successful Rose City Tournament

MADISON, NEW JERSEY—Wittenberg women's basketball made great strides over the weekend at the Rose City Classic. The Tigers finished 1-1 on the weekend after falling to Middlebury on Saturday, and downing the host, Drew University, in double-overtime on Sunday. The Tigers double-overtime victory was settled with a score of 76-71 as the red and white outhustled the Rangers, and dominated the glass, 65-38. The Tigers win is the first victory as head coach for Coach Mahlum.  The Tigers now sit at 1-2 on the year with a meeting between the Tigers and the defending national-champions Thomas More, on November 26 at 4:00PM.

DREW NOTES

  • In a game where the Tigers led by as many as nine, the young team was not able to fight off a late Drew comeback in the second half before heading to overtime.  
  • Bobbie Clayton cashed in on a free-throw to knot things up at 52 at the end of regulation, as the Tigers stiff defense held Drew off with nine-seconds remaining, sending the game into the first overtime.
  • In overtime, the Tigers found themselves down 57-61 before two Alex Kiess free-throws and a Liz Tolliver layup gridlocked the game at 61-61 with 23 seconds remaining.
  • The first overtime would end in that fashion, before an Alexis Perry long-ball put the Tigers up 64-61 at the start of the second overtime period.
  • The Tigers let Drew creep back into the game, taking a 69-68 lead before Clayton cashed in a layup on an and-one, converting the free-throw, to put the Tigers up 71-69.
  • The Rangers would tie things up at 71 before Kiess drew a foul on a three-point shot, converting all three attempts, taking a 74-71 lead with 39 ticks remaining.
  • Forced to foul, Drew sent Perry to the foul line for the Tigers, cashing in both free throws to put the game out of reach at 76-71.

TOURNAMENT NOTES

  • Clayton was named all-tournament team upon the conclusion of Sunday's contest, as the junior recorded eight points, six rebounds and four assists in the loss to Middlebury, and 16 points, six rebounds and four assists in the double-overtime win over Drew.
  • Perry recorded 15 points, two rebounds and three assits against Middlebury and followed up the performance with 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists against Drew.
  • Keiss also had two standout games for the Tigers, producing eight points, five rebounds and two assists against Middlebury, followed up by an offensive explosion that featured 22 points, five rebounds and two assists against Drew.
