Tigers Lose Final NCAC Roadtrip to Kenyon, 62-47

GAMBIER, Ohio—Wittenberg women's basketball dropped a NCAC match Wednesday evening to Kenyon College, 62-47. The Tigers hung close with Kenyon in the first quarter, but fell victim to a big second quarter that proved to be too much for Wittenberg to overcome.  On the night, Becca Ziska (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) led the Tigers with 15 points on six of 12 shooting, including three made three-pointers. Ziska's offensive output was highlighted by 13 of her 15 points coming in the first half. The loss puts Wittenberg's record at 7-15 overall and 6-9 in NCAC play, with the season's final game February 20.

 

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • Kenyon was able to get out to an 8-0 run at the beginning of the second quarter, before Ziska splashd home a three-pointer with 8:13 left in the quarter, cutting the lead to 24-17.
  • As the quarter continued, Wittenberg could not find an answer for Kenyon's offensive outburst as the visitors trailed 30-17 with 4:00 remaining in the quarter.
  • The third-quarter proved to be similar, as the Tigers trailed 44-26 after Michelle Brunswick (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) layup with 3:48 remaining.
  • The Tigers were able to cut the Kenyon lead down to 11 points in the fourth quarter, but could not fend off Kenyon's lead despite their best efforts, dropping the contest 62-47.
 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Wittenberg was out-rebounded in Wednesday night's loss, 36-33 and in turn was outscored in the paint, 24-16.
  • The Tiger bench had a nice showing in Gambier, producing 17 points as Madison Linn (Piqua, Ohio/Miami East) and Teddi Tankersley (Springfield, Ohio/Greenon) combined for 10 points.

 

KEY STATS

  • Brunswick continued her hot-streak of filling up the stat sheet, this time the junior finished with seven points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
  • Wittenberg managed to force Kenyon to turn the ball over 20 times in the game, capitalizing on these miscues with 14 points.

 

FROM THE BENCH

  • "Tough night all around for our team. While we gave it a great effort in the fourth, we wish we had that fire from the start to give us a shot at maybe a different outcome" said Coach Jurewicz.
 

UP NEXT

  • The Tigers return to Springfield this Saturday, February 20 as they take on Oberlin at 2:00PM. Prior to tip off, Wittenberg will honor this years senior players in senior day festivities.
