Mount St. Joseph Takes Third Place With 77-63 Win Over CCNY

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -The second day of the 2014 Zimmerman Classic tipped off with the Mount St. Joseph Lions defeating City College of New York by a final score of 77-63.

The Lions controlled nearly every statistical category, outshooting the Beavers 41.7 percent to 36.4 percent from the field. Leading Mount St. Joseph in the scoring column was Meredith Hartfiel, who came off the bench to score 18 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting.

CCNY didn't go down without a fight as they managed to win the boards on the day, as the Beavers outrebounded Mount St. Joseph by a 53-37 margin. Eighteen of those rebounds were at the offensive end. The leading rebounder for the Beavers was Tiara Brown, who pulled down 11 boards, while Karissa Core led CCNY with 18 points.

The true tale of the game came down to the turnovers and free throws. With City College turning the ball over 25 times, including 17 in the first alone, the Lions capitalized with 19 points off turnovers. Though the Beavers committed less fouls in the game, the Lions were able to make more of their foul shots given the chance to go to the line, making 62.1 percent of their shots compared to CCNY 47.6 from the charity stripe.

The loss dropped CCNY to 2-9 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph improved to 3-6.
