SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's basketball team improved to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with a 71-61 victory over Oberlin on Saturday afternoon in Pam Evans Smith Arena.
After a spirited alumni game and gathering, the varsity Tigers suited up and took care of business with Oberlin in town.
The Tigers relied upon senior Katelyn Haralamos (aineville, Ohio/Kings) and her 24 points, matching a career high set on Nov. 16, 2013 against Trine. Haralamos went 8-for-14 from the field with two three-pointers and a 6-of-7 mark at the free throw line and three assists.
Senior Heather Schroeder (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) dropped in six of her 12 shots for 13 points to back up Haralamos, while senior Darbie Zirkle (St. Paris, Ohio/Graham) pulled in third with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Zirkle led the team in rebounding, though, with eight boards, most at the defensive end, while posting nicely distributed numbers with four assists, four steals and a block. Sophomore Michelle Brunswick (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) had a similar night with a line of three rebounds, two assists, three steals and three blocks.
Senior Enri Small (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) secured four offensive rebounds and seven total.
The Tigers took a first-half lead of 44-32 into the second period, where they held off an energetic Yeowomen team for the victory. Oberlin fell to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the NCAC with the defeat.
Wittenberg now travels to Kenyon for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Tomsich Arena in Gambier, Ohio.
