Wittenberg Pulls Away From Rose-Hulman To Reach Zimmerman Championship Game

Freshman Katelyn Haralamos (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) scored all 14 of her points in the second half to lead the Wittenberg Tigers to a 69-54 victory over Rose-Hulman in the opening game of the 2011 Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic for both teams.

The Tigers will shoot for their 11th mid-season home tournament title in the 2011 championship game, set for 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, against Wilmington. The Quakers topped Brescia 59-51 in the day's first game.

In improving to 4-5 on the season, the Tigers shot 44 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line, while outrebounding the Engineers by 10 and committing five fewer turnovers. It all added up to an early lead for the Tigers that they built upon throughout the second half, in large part thanks to the work turned in by Haralamos.

After finishing the first half with zero points, two rebounds and two assists in 14 minutes, Haralamos stuffed the stats sheet over the final 20 minutes to finish with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. She scored eight of Wittenberg's first 10 points in the second half and assisted on the other basket as an eight-point halftime advantage stretched to 15 at the 13:13 mark.

Rose-Hulman, which fell to 2-8 on the season while shooting 39 percent from the field, would get no closer than seven the rest of the way. The Engineers, who will take on Brescia in the consolation game at noon tomorrow, were paced by 23 points and eight rebounds from Kelsey Ploof and 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals from Alisa Dickerson.

Haralamos was one of three Tigers in double figures offensively. The team leader was junior Kim Replogle (Houston, Ohio/Houston), who finished 7-of-10 from the floor en route to a 16-point, six-rebound, three-steal performance. Senior Sarah Watson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 14 points and six rebounds.

The Tigers are shooting for their first title in their annual holiday extravanganza since 2004.
