Inspired Senior Day Performance Lifts Tigers To Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women sent their two senior players out in style with a 69-54 victory over the College of Wooster in the final home conference game of the season. A well-rounded offensive performance, with 10 of the 11 players on the floor finding the scoring column, contributed to the Tigers' eighth win in conference.

Head coach Sarah Jurewicz and the program paid tribute to two seniors, Rachel Dixon (West Liberty, Ohio/Salem) and Katie Gardner (Newark, Ohio/Catholic), who were playing in their final conference game at Pam Evans Smith Arena. Both played inspired basketball, with Dixon near yet another double-double in her 14-point, nine-rebound effort. Gardner added six points, a pair of rebounds, a steal, a block and an assist for the Tigers.

On senior day, a pair of juniors also stood out, with Elise Jenkins (Elida, Ohio/Elida) playing her best game of the season with a nine-point output. Carrie Dyer (Copley, Ohio/Copley) stuffed the stat box with six points, five dishes, four boards, and three steals.

Wittenberg parlayed 46 percent shooting (23-50) into a double figure lead early in the game, a lead that the Tigers would never allow to get inside eight points. Hot three point shooting kept the Scots in the game, but Wittenberg held standout Kym Wenz to 12 points, eight below her season average.

The Tigers also limited their mistakes to 16 turnovers, one of their lowest totals of the season while forcing 22 Wooster miscues and turning them into 23 points. In the post, Wittenberg took over the game, scoring 34 points in the paint compared to only 10 for the Scots.

The win moves Wittenberg to 13-10 on the season and 8-7 in the NCAC. With one more home game on tap, a Monday evening meeting with the Capital Crusaders at 7 p.m., the Tigers await their final regular season game coming up on Saturday, Feb. 21 from Oberlin College to cap off conference play.
