Big Second Half Propels Tigers Past OWU For NCAC Title Clincher

DELAWARE, Ohio - The wins keep piling up for the Wittenberg Tigers, and now space will have to be cleared in the trophy case for another piece of hardware for the women's basketball team. A 77-58 road win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday assured that the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title trophy will reside in Springfield with the Wittenberg Tigers for the fourth time in the last five years.

Wittenberg won for the 12th time in the last 13 games and improved to 17-6 overall and 13-1 in the NCAC. Ohio Wesleyan fell to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in the NCAC. The Tigers also clinched home court advantage for the NCAC Tournament semifinals and finals on Feb. 24-25 when Allegheny defeated Denison. The Gators are two games behind Wittenberg with two to play, but the Tigers own the tiebreaker with a pair of wins over Allegheny this season.

The key for the Tigers in recent weeks has the continued improvement of their post and wing players, and the usual suspects continued to play well against Ohio Wesleyan. In a breakout season of many outstanding games, junior post Kathy Hittle may have topped herself with a 17-point, 17-rebound effort. That included nine offensive boards as the Tigers rolled up a commanding 50-33 rebounding advantage.

Junior wing Rachel Clark-Haggy reached double figures for a third straight game, adding 16 points and seven rebounds to the winning effort. Sophomore post Katie Gregorevich chipped in with a terrific all-around performance off the bench, contributing 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Ohio Wesleyan put two players in double figures, led by Molly Baker with a game-high 18 points, but the Battling Bishops were held to 33 percent shooting from the field. Wittenberg shot 41 percent, committed four less turnovers, and sewed the game up at the free throw line, making 27 of a whopping 42 attempts.
