Tigers Rally In Second Half To Beat Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers scrapped their way past the College of Wooster, 69-57, in a key early season North Coast Athletic Conference match-up.

The win kept the Tigers atop the standings with a 2-0 NCAC mark and pushed them back over .500 for the season at 4-3. The Scots dropped to 1-1 and 3-4 overall.

The Tigers won the game with a strong game in the post and just enough three-point shooting. Junior post Kathy Hittle put together an outstanding game, despite going head-to-head with 6-2 Wooster standout Carly Loehrke for most of the game. Hittle put together her fifth double-double in seven games already this season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

But Hittle wasn't alone in the paint as the Tigers won the rebounding battle 43-34. Sophomore post Ali Rohlfs added a season-high 13 points and eight rebounds and junior wing Rachel Clark-Haggy added 10 points, two rebounds and two assists to the effort. Her 4-of-5 shooting performance from the field was a key for the Tigers' struggling offense.

Wooster led for most of the first half before freshman guard Kristin Donawerth drilled a three-pointer with 37 seconds left before halftime to draw the Tigers within one point. The Tigers opened the second half with an 10-2 run and never allowed Wooster any closer than four points the rest of the way. Hittle scored all 10 of her points in the second half.

The Tigers hit 20-of-27 shots from the free throw line, another key statistic. For the game, Wittenberg made 39 percent from the field, compared to 33 percent for the Scots, who were led by guard Beth Besancon with a game-high 20 points.
