  • Basketball Players, Coach Earn Regional, National Postseason Awards

    Wittenberg fans were treated to another tremendous basketball season in 2005-06, one that led to a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season championship for the women and an NCAC Tournament crown and a run to the national title game in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the men. Predictably, regional and even national honors have followed for three individual student-athletes.

    The Wittenberg women's basketball team got back on track in 2005-06, putting together a 19-8 overall record, including a 14-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. That was good for the program's 11th NCAC regular season title in just 17 years in the league - easily tops among member institutions.

It wasn't quite as dominating as the 46-point win Wittenberg recorded in a December meeting between the two teams, but the Tigers enjoyed a comfort level throughout and played everyone in uniform for the trip.

It was Wittenberg's 30th win in 33 meetings with the Gators, and the Tigers' ninth win in the last 10 meetings between the two teams.

    After leading almost the entire game, the Wittenberg Tigers saw their advantage evaporate in the final minutes of regulation against Denison on Tuesday in the HPER Center. A freshman then came off the bench to rescue the Tigers and put sophomore post Ali Rohlfs in position to hit the game-winning jumper with just six seconds left in overtime, which gave Wittenberg an 82-80 victory over the visiting Big Red.

    The Wittenberg University men’s and women’s basketball teams welcome an outstanding field of eight teams for the 2005 Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic. This year’s competition is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 29, and Friday, Dec. 30, at Wittenberg’s HPER Center. Games for both days are scheduled for 1, 3, 6 and 8 p.m.
