Wittenberg Downs McMurry To Even Record

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Young teams must learn tough lessons, especially early in a season. Then they must take those lessons and apply them on-court.

Consider the first lesson of the 2004-05 season learned for the Wittenberg Tiger women's basketball team. A night after struggling with turnovers and three-point shooting in a 10-point loss to Howard Payne, the Tigers improved dramatically in both areas to claim a 65-48 victory over McMurry in the final game of the Southwestern University TipOff Tournament.

The win evened Wittenberg's record at 1-1 on the young season, while McMurry dropped to 0-2. The Tigers next hit the court on Tuesday, Nov. 23, as they host perennial powerhouse Baldwin-Wallace in the HPER Center at 7 p.m.

Wittenberg never trailed in this game, and after pushing the lead out to 10 points less than 10 minutes into the first half, the Tigers were never truly threatened either. The lead slowly expanded to as much as 19 points in the late-going as McMurry was unable to generate much offense.

The Tigers, on the other hand, spread the wealth and put three players in double figures offensively. Sophomore guard Megan Miller threw in a career-high 17 points in her first career start, which in combination with 10 points the previous night was enough to place Miller on the all-tournament team.

Freshman Ali Rohlfs was solid again, contributing 14 points and seven rebounds to the cause. And sophomore point guard Andrea Hackett provided a spark off the bench with a career-high 10 points in 22 minutes of action. Wittenberg outrebounded McMurry by a whopping 45-31 margin, led by junior Joyce Dindo off the bench with a game-high six boards.
