Wittenberg runs past Earlham, 76-56

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's basketball team jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and cruised to a 76-56 victory over the visiting Earlham Quakers.

The Tigers improved to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wittenberg's next game is Wednesday, Jan. 26, at first-place Kenyon, which lost to the Tigers 64-35 on Jan. 12. The game is set for a 6 p.m. tip. Earlham dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the NCAC.

Rebounds played a key role in the match-up between the Quakers and Tigers. The Tigers had 12 more rebounds than their opponent. The Tigers harrassed the Quakers into 28 turnovers, compared to 20 for Wittenberg.

Three players reached double figures in scoring for the Tigers. Senior Emilie Schmid led the Tigers with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. In addition, sophomore Kathy Hittle contributed 11 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field. Finally, freshman Katie Gregorevich had 10 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the field. Also of note was the play of junior guard Brittany Landreth, who had seven steals, just two short of the school record.

Earlham got a game-high 22 points from Guin Summerton. Wittenberg shot 50 percent for the game, while Earlham hit 49 percent of its shots, both well above the teams' season averages.
