Wittenberg Turns In 67-46 Win Over Centre

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers spread the wealth on offense and took advantage of 35 Centre College turnovers in a 67-46 victory in the first round of the Kiwanis-Wittenberg Holiday Classic. The win moved the Tigers into the tournament championship game against Hanover College at 6 p.m. Thursday, while Centre moved to the consolation game against Buffalo State at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Wittenberg won for the fourth time in nine outings in the 2004-05 season and Centre fell to 2-8 overall.

The Tigers took the lead for good at the 12:32 mark of the first half, although the advantage wasn't particularly comfortable until late in the second half. Wittenberg led 28-22 at halftime and slowly stretched that lead throughout the final 20 minutes until eight of the final 10 points to push the margin to 21.

The points off turnovers specialty statistic really told the story. Centre committed a whopping 35 miscues, compared to 15 turnovers by the host team, leading to 27 more shots for Wittenberg and a 31-9 advantage on points off turnovers. In addition, Centre, which had just seven players see the court in the game, was outscored 46-12 in bench points.

That's because Wittenberg put 15 players into the game and 12 of them scored, led by freshman post Katie Gregorevich with 12 in just 18 minutes off the bench. Sophomore post Kathy Hittle added 10 points and eight rebounds, the latter tying her for game honors. The Tigers were outrebounded in the game, 36-28, but Wittenberg picked up four more offensive caroms, led by Hittle's five.

Centre put three players in double figures, led by Jayme Davis' 16 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Clontz added 12 points and Sarah Sheeran finished with 11 points and eight boards. The rest of the Colonels scored just seven points.
