Tiger Men, Women Win NCAC Championships With Identical 16-0 Records

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For the first time since the 1993-94 school year, the Wittenberg University men's and women's basketball teams have won the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championships with perfect 16-0 records. Wittenberg is the only school ever to accomplish the feat.

The Tiger men are on an 18-game win streak in the 2003-04 season, dating back to a Dec. 10 home loss to nationally ranked Otterbein, and they haven't lost in NCAC regular season play since Feb. 1, 2003, at Allegheny, a span of 24 straight games. The men, who have 10 NCAC regular season titles to their credit since joining the league in 1989, are 22-3 overall after defeating Allegheny at home on Saturday by a final of 85-66. The Tigers are the No. 1 seed and host team for the NCAC Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal games on Tuesday, Feb. 24, for the third time in the last four years.

The Tiger women are on a 16-game win streak in the 2003-04 season, dating back to a Dec. 20 home loss to Thomas More, the top-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region currently, and they haven't lost in NCAC regular season play since Feb. 2, 2002, at Allegheny, a span of 36 straight games. The women have four perfect 16-0 NCAC regular seasons and 10 championships to their credit since 1989. The Tigers improved to 20-5 overall with a 66-60 home win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday. They will be the No. 1 seed and host team for the NCAC Tournament for the third straight year when quarterfinal action commences on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The Tiger men are coached by Bill Brown, Wittenberg Class of 1973, who has an 11-year record at his alma mater of 248-60 and an overall 17-year record of 308-159. His Wittenberg teams have won six NCAC regular season titles and two NCAC Tournament titles, and the Tigers have advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament six times in his career.

The Tiger women are coached by Pam Smith, Wittenberg Class of 1982, who has an 18-year record at her alma mater of 345-139. Her Wittenberg teams have won 10 NCAC regular season titles and six NCAC Tournament titles, and the Tigers have advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament seven times in her career.
